What are the rules about hobby rocket launches in public parks

I am interested in hobby rockets. What are the rules about launching them in a park or other clearing? Do I have to get allowance from the local police/fire department or town hall? I'm in the Milwaukee area.

The flying of model rockets may not be allowed in public parks in some cities. You should check with local authorities first. In all cases, you should have the permission of the landowner before flying rockets on private property.

Model Rockets - No restrictions. Just use common sense and follow the safety code. Rocket must weigh less than one (1) pound at liftoff and contain less than the equivalent of two (2) G-class engines.

Large Model Rockets - FAA notification required. Rockets that weigh more than one (1) pound at liftoff but less than 3.3 pounds require you to notify the FAA. These rockets may use up through one (1) H-class engine

Since most people do not have a large pasture for a backyard, many people begin flying at a local school or park but be sure to get permission from the proper authority before you take to the skies. It might be helpful to get aquatinted with your local fire codes as well. If possible locate and visit the nearest NAR club. They will have a good field, tons of information about flying and welcome you with open arms. It is always more fun flying with a group than by yourself.
