Is it a good idea to adopt a cat for my son from the pound

My son is an only child and gets bored and lonely because he is so active. I want to get him a cat because he likes cats, but how much will it cost to adopt one? About how much does it cost to maintain one

I think that's a great idea! Not only will your son have a new friend, but he will learn many valuable lessons from having a pet such as empathy and responsibility.

Cats are very low-maintenance compared to dogs. They clean themselves, they remember how to get home after being outside, and get their own exercise. They also entertain themselves pretty well, especially kittens, who will play with anything. The only things you have to worry about are feeding them, making sure they have water, and a litterbox if they are indoors.

Also, a cat is more exciting than a fish :)

There will probably be a fee to adopt the cat, but this is better than getting a free kitten because they aren't really free... they need shots and everything which could end up costing more than just getting one from a shelter.

A tip though... a lot of shelters may refuse to adopt any cats to you if you even mention the word "outdoors." They will even try to trick you by giving you a questionarre to fill out with one of the questions being "will your cat be indoors or outdoors?" If your answer isn't "it will never go outside" they will refuse to give you a cat even if you change your mind and promise to keep it indoors. I don't see any harm in letting the cat outside every once in a while, but they do so I would just give them the answer they want.

Also, cats vary in personality. There are some cats who just plain don't like children. However, there are also many cats who are very friendly and get along with everyone. Try your best to get a very friendly cat who will enjoy hanging out with your son.
