What are the first steps to taking up photography as a hobby

I'm really interested in taking up photography as a hobby, maybe even side job. I'm looking for some advice or pointers to get started. What kind of camera to get, different learning methods......all and all how to improve. Right now, I'm looking into getting a Nikon S4000 or a D60. Any advice would be helpful especially about what camera to get.

In order to master photography either as a hobby or as a professional, you need to be able to master light. However I won't go into that now but what I will share with you a three really handy tips.

First, think about what you want to do first. For example do you want to do landscape photography? Perhaps you are more interested in portrait photography? By determining what it is that you and you want to do with photography you can then start searching for the type of camera that will best suit your interest.

Secondly I recommend that when you are searching through camera don't just look at the camera but also it is extremely important to look at the quality of the lens. You can be the best photographer in the world but if you do not have the sharpness and depth of quality in your lens you will not get the detail and the brilliance in your photos.

Thirdly it is important to nurture your visual artistic skills. This can be caught up to a certain point, as many of my student’s experience, but it is very important to have a real feel for how things look in your photograph.
