What enjoyable hobbies/activities are there that would improve skills relevant to surgery?
Anything that requires fine motor skills. A fascinating hobby that I took up over 40 years ago was watchmaking. I did it as a hobby at first, repairing railroad pocket watches. Eventually, I actually became a pretty darned skilled watch repairman. and actually made a few dollars on the side (but that wasn't my primary goal). I mainly did it as a "Zen" thing, to focus my mind and body on something requiring microscopic dexterity and total relaxation. To say that developed fine motor control is the understatement of the year. I can thread the eye of the tiniest needle today (with the help of a magnifying loupe, of course). You might also look into building model planes, or model trains, or perhaps constructing electronics kits. All these things require fine motor controls.
