Google Ranking WITHOUT submitting to Google

A while back, I read an article that explained how to get a good google rating without ever submitting your site to their submission forms. Like you, I was kind of shocked by this statement so I decided to give it a try.

In the beginning, I used to submit my site all the time to Google but soon realized the magnitude of my failure. Of course, it's a known fact that Google relies solely on your link popularity and content.

Link Popularity?

What that means is the amount of links listed on other sites that are related to yours! The more sites that link to you, the greater your popularity!

So again, Google depends on your link popularity! If you don't have a google rating (In other words, is your link found on google?) some sites WILL NOT link to yours. There are many sites that have a great google rating and have specific regulations to whom they will accept within their resource sections. They will specify that your site must be listed within Google and if they type in your site in the google search bar, your site should be listed within the top 5 sites.

Here's The Theory:

Of course you want all sites to link to you, especially the ones who already have a great google rating because that means that your site will be picked up by google. Some people only try to get links from those sites but just remember, we all had to start somewhere.

My suggestion is to do as many link exchanges as possible and especially make sure that each site is specifically categorized by their content. You will get penalized for having one page full of links to sites that do not relate to each other.

Another little "Timbit", try to keep your pages to 1-20 links within each page. Once you have 20 links, add a button to a (PAGE 2) and continue your resources that way.
Ok, so I went a little off topic with respect to this article but you'll see how everything is connected together. Once google starts ranking your site, you don't want to leave any stone left un-turned.

So back to getting a google rank without submitting your site. Once you start performing link exchanges with other sites, just keep on going and going and I promise that eventually, Google will start picking up some of your links on other sites. Once this starts to happen you're google rank will rise.

So just keep doing what you're doing and let Google do it's own thing. When your ready and you're link popularity grows, then you can submit your site to Google and reap the rewards.

So many companies do this process backwards and wonder why they don't get listed in Google. Or like what happened to me, Google lists your site right away but then in a couple of weeks, presto, your site is gone from their listing and your left confused as to why!

How Content Can Really Increase Your Sales

Search engines don't buy products and services. People do.

To sell your products and services online, you need targeted traffic. Search engines will send you targeted traffic, and a lot of it, if you take certain steps.

The first step in your search engine marketing campaign isn't search engine optimization. Your first step is to understand the internet and how to effectively use it to promote your products and services.

The internet is a content driven medium. Searchers are looking for information. They don't want to be sold to. They want value. You can provide this value through the content you write for your website, as well as content you write for your promotions.

Therefore, you need to develop a complete, content management strategy. Your content management strategy needs to be customer focused, content driven, and optimized for the search engines.

Your content management strategy should consider on page and off page optimization factors. On page factors include optimizing your page for keywords relevant to your page, titles, and descriptions. Off page factors include link exchanges and backlinks.

Once you've chosen the topic for your site, you need to develop your website. Decide what content you will write. Your content should include articles, press releases, and product reviews. You can also create free ebooks, reports, and white papers provided the information you include will be useful to your site visitor.

Before developing your content, you need to do your research. Find out what your readers are searching for. There are plenty of free tools and software on the internet to help you accomplish this task. Simply search for a keyword phrase like "keyword suggestion tools".

When you're ready to write your content, choose two to three keywords and/or keyword phrases in the text for your page. Write your content and then optimize your page for these keywords. You can use free software like Web CEO.

Although on page optimization will help you if you don't have a lot of competition for your keyword phrases, it is not enough if you are targeting high competition words. To raise your rankings, you will need to link to high traffic sites with high page rank. Building backlinks from other websites will also help you raise your rankings.

Do a search in your favorite search engine to find sites you can link to. Study these sites. Check to see what keywords they use to optimize their pages. Find out if they exchange links and request a link exchange.

The key to success in search engine marketing is to do your homework BEFORE you create your website. The bottom line is that no matter how many links you have pointing back to your site, or how well you optimize your page for the search engines, you won't rank high for keywords that are too competitive.

If you still insist on building a website on a highly competitive topic, then I would recommend you use other techniques to promote your site. Article writing, forum posting, press releases, pay per click ads, and offline classifieds.

The bottom line is you won't succeed in any business you aren't passionate about. Choose a topic you like that has a market and then build a content rich search engine friendly market. Get your name out there and keep branding yourself. You will succeed.

What Is SEO And How Backlinks Help In Better Serp's

SEO is one of the most unnecessarily complicated jobs there is in the internet business world. There are so many "secrets" and "gurus" that offer you the hidden knowledge necessary for top search engine rankings, when in reality, search engine optimization is actually pretty simple.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, can be divided into two parts: on-site SEO, and link building.

On-site SEO is the process of optimizing the content of your pages for a particular keyword or keywords. The easiest way to do this is to use a free tool like WebCEO that will analyze your webpage and make suggestions on how you can better optimize it.

At it's simplest, on-site SEO is making sure that your keywords are found (in the right numbers) in the right places. Specifically, the search engines want to see your keywords in:

- Page titles
- Page body
- Bold text
- Top of page
- Bottom of page
- Alt text
- Text links

Link building, the second half of SEO, is at least as important as on-site SEO, but is often neglected. When search engines look at your site, they also look at all of the sites that link to your site. Each site that links to your site gives your site a certain number of "votes", based on several factors.

So, the more quality links you can get to your site, the higher you will rank in the major search engines. But before you can start gaining links to your site, you need to know what makes a quality link. There are several factors that determine a link's quality:

1 – Anchor text
A high quality link will have your keyword(s) in the anchor text, or the clickable text part of the link.

2- Site quality
A high quality link is one from a quality, unique, content based site related to your site.

3- Anchor text variation
When building links, you'll want to vary your anchor text. If all of your links have the same text, search engines may discount them as spam.

4- Slowly but surely
Good things come to those who wait. Building links should be done slowly and steadily. If you build a whole bunch of links at once, you risk the links being discounted as spam by the search engines.

Are You Setting Up A Website For Your Business?

There are very few businesses these days that don't have websites, and as a home business your website is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. A good website can really work for you, but you need to know what you're doing.

Hire Foreign Designers.

Web design really is something that you shouldn't try to do yourself, unless you really know what you're doing -- I'm sure you've seen what happens when people try this. Hiring a web designer, though, can be prohibitively expensive. Luckily for you, the Internet puts you in touch with designers all over the world, and it's easy to hire one of them very cheaply to design your website. They don't do any worse of a job than someone in your country would, it just happens that your few hundred dollars is worth as much to someone in India as a few thousand would be to you or I.

Use Search Engine Optimisation.

There are a heck of a lot of websites out there, and search engines will return everything relevant to a user's search. How can you possibly get your site above the thousands of others that the search engine thinks are relevant to your keywords?

The answer is to use basic search engine optimisation techniques. For example, make sure you often use phrases that you think your target market will be searching for (your 'keywords'), and make your web addresses contain them too. For this article, for example, http://www.website.com/home-business-website would be a much better web address than http://www.website.com/articles/205. That's just a brief introduction -- there's a whole SEO industry out there, if you go looking for it.

Have Lots of Useful Content.

When you have a website, you're not just trying to reach people who were searching for you -- you're trying to get people to check your website, read your latest news and offers, and the rest. The best way of doing this is to have fresh and useful content on there. Write short articles about the kind of things your customers might be interested in. If your home business is computer repair, for example, you could keep track of the latest virus threats on your site and offer help to anyone affected.
Make It Easy to Update.

You should make sure that whatever software you're using to write your website makes it easy to post new articles without too many problems. If you have go to around putting HTML tags into your articles before you can upload them, then you should think about changing the way your website works.

Keep a Weblog.

One of the simplest ways to have fresh, useful content on your site is to keep a weblog (or 'blog'). A blog is a series of entries, like entries in a diary, that are displayed on your site starting with the most recent first. It is easy to log in and quickly write a new entry, and it can be as short or as long as you like.

For your home business' blog, the only rule to stick to is not to post anything there that isn't related to your industry and your work. It might be great that you've got a new baby or sad that your cat Mr Tibbles died, but you should start a personal blog on another website if you want to post about that kind of thing.

Let People E-Mail You with No Hassle.

One of the worst mistakes people often make when they're starting a website is to think that it would be a good idea to give their customers a 'contact form' to fill in. People really, really don't like filling in forms, and you'll lose a lot of interested customers if you require them to tell you all sorts of things before you'll even talk to them over the Internet.

The best thing to do is to simply list your email address on your site, as a clickable link, and advise customers near the link of the kind of information it would be useful for them to include in an email. It might sound strange, but people are far more willing to go to the trouble of typing things in when it's on their own terms, and not into an annoying web form.

An SEOGOOG SandBox

A few weeks ago, I presented myself with a challenge – to do some Internet sleuthing and get to the bottom of this perplexing condition that newly search engine optimized websites (that's SEO) face known as the Google Sandbox. At times this endeavor made me empathize with Captain Ahab chasing his white whale, but unlike Ahab, I'm not going to meet a watery grave today. ICMediaDirect.com provides SEOs with life jackets – so I got that going for me, which is good. The obsession to confirm, pin down, and counteract the effects of this Sandbox is proving as difficult and elusive as any whale hunt I've ever been on.

Before explaining to the uninitiated just what the Sandbox is exactly, or what it's purported to be, it warrants mentioning that Google officially neither confirms nor denies its existence. So from the word "go" we wade into mystery. We're forced to consider the Sandbox as either a modern quasi-myth of the Computer Age or an actual no man's land created by Google where SEOs are pitted against the machine. Kinda cool, right? This would be a limbo, an undesired waiting room for web properties seeking quality recognition from Google's Search Engine Results Pages are, as I like to say, unSERPable. Incidentally, the stakes are very high, too, since higher rankings mean increased revenue.

The effects of the Sandbox are not in question. Websites listing with Google are simply beat down in their rankings for no apparent rhyme or reason, thus leaving the afflicted with no avenue of redress but time itself – no magic linking is known to spring sites out. (Though it's whispered that influential friends at Google can pull favors.) New websites and overhauled existing websites (often reworked, ostensibly, for better rankings) are its primary "victims". It was first noticed or acknowledged in October, 2004. No one outside of Google knows exactly how or why sites are Sandboxed.

Here are some Sandbox basics: it only happens to English speaking websites; it is a ".com"-only phenomenon, no ".edu"s, ".us"s, or ".org"s need worry; it could last from weeks to a year before release into deserving results rankings; its effects are seen with Google only, so you can rank high on Yahoo and be in the Sandbox (or even rank poorly – I have little info handy on poorly optimized websites mired in suspected Sandboxes); the Sandbox is by no means universal and not automatic. It's a crapshoot.

There is a minority of SEOs who think that the Sandbox is the end result of better algorithms and not and specially created punishment. Believing, as I do, that Google has the best search results, this isn't implausible.

I believe Google intentionally Sandboxes websites because they can. Google's search share is largely unrivalled and growing strongly. What better way for Google to keep separating itself from the search engine pack than to have websites jumping through hoops in hopes to conform to Google's semi-secretive algorithmic wishes. And what better way to do this than through the secret sauce of unacknowledged spider block. Google's engineers keep the search world apprehensive and guessing so that SEOs will employ conventional and anticipated optimization methods in hopes to evade the Sandbox.

Talk about your Jedi mind tricks: SEOs are now optimizing in a fashion that suits Google with much less link bombing and more content emphasis. This aids Google's indexing efforts greatly. The Sandbox, being a phenomenon oft-alluded to and ill-explained, is totally logical when viewed in this light. Fearing the unknown (and the ire of clients) we optimize humbly, to start.

And I love this. "No one knows" is what most SEOs will say about various Sandbox details. Someone knows. Someone besides in-the-know Google engineers always knows, but isn't saying. SEOs will have you believe they're giving away everything but their gym locker combination; to the point where you'd think that there are no secrets in this business. Well, as in any other business, information is the most valuable commodity and there will be nothing that you will get for free; nothing of a proprietary nature will be shared that will not provide its source with either direct or back-end value.

It's tough to declare this, but I must: no SEO has enough data or access to solve the Sandbox. It's not even worth trying and the best thing we can do is compare notes. Pretty sad, but it's all we got. (Or is it?)

It is widely believed that Matt Cutts, an engineering guru at Google, acknowledged the existence of the Sandbox at SES NYC in March, 2005. That's bunk. He didn't acknowledge anything, but he did answer his questions carefully supposing there was a Sandbox. He played with words and said some algorithms "might" affect "certain" websites in "some" circumstances that would, in effect, ape Sandbox-like results. Well, gee. Thanks, Matt. You didn't say anything, but legions of SEOs rushed to the messageboards with their confirm reports like they'd just filmed Sasquatch. No free lunches, no free secrets. Mr. Cutts just stoked the fires- that's all. Good job, Matt, but I'll get you yet. Cheers.

The Best Way How To Improve Link Popularity

There are many ways how to improve link popularity. If you are webmaster who is hungry for better ranking in search engines, this article was written for you. There are hundreds of factors which determine your search engine position. Except on-page factors there are off-page factors too. And these factors seem to be most important for big search engines like Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

When I speak about off-page factors I mean not only the number of the links pointing to your website. If you want to achieve top positions in search engines you must care about relevance of your back links. Let's say you are a web designer. In your case the most valuable links are from another web designers websites. Very valuable will be links from related industries like web hosting, search engine optimization (seo) or webmaster tools. By contrast, link from site like online casino will have minimal value for you. From this reason exchange links with relevant websites only. Internet is full of sites related to yours so why waste your time with gaining worthless back links?

When webmasters exchange links, a lot of them care too much about pagerank of partner's website. Yes, you are right -- link from PR8 site is better then link from PR0. But keep in mind that those new sites with PR0 will grow with time and their PR will grow too. It can easily happen that you exchange a link with PR0 website today and after 6 months this site gain PR5+. And now let's answer this important question: What is easier -- get link on PR0 website which will grow or on PR5+ site? From my point of view each link has big value as long as it is from relevant website.

Let's look at another factors used by search engines to determine the value of back links. You have probably heard terms "one-way" and "reciprocal" links. One-way links are links where webmaster of site A links to site B but webmaster of site B doesn't link back to site A. Reciprocal links are links where webmaster A links to site B and webmaster B links back to site A. There are two important facts:
1. One-way links have a little higher value for search engines. Search engines suppose that one-way links are most likely natural and predicate the quality of the linked website.

2. Reciprocal links have a little lower value from the reason mentioned above. But it is easier to get reciprocal link then one-way link (In case that your site is quality, of course. For poor websites it is always difficult to gain back links). Anyway relevant reciprocal link is always better then one-way link from unrelated website.

The last factor I will describe in this article is the age of the domain. If you get link from the 5 years old domain the link will have higher value then link from the new site. Many spammers register domains for one year, use them as link farms and when they are banned by search engines (it takes probably less then one year) then they don't renew this domain and register a new one. On the other side, if the site is a few years old and had never used any unfair SEO tactics, search engines give this site higher importance.

So if you are trying to improve link popularity of your website, don't forget that it is not only about pagerank. You need links from quality websites. Making your website the best in your field is the right way how to get these valuable links.

How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking

Search engine ranking is the ranking of a website or web page in the search engine results, for a given keyword phrase

Getting top search engine ranking requires that your site is designed well and is easily spiderable. Designing a search-engine-friendly web site isn't difficult; you just have to keep a few basic concepts in mind.

Search engines like to spider and rank sites that appeal to users. This is the main challenge for search engine developers to create algorithms that will favor user-friendly web sites while casting aside sites that are created mainly for spiders. This means that the rule of search engine friendly design is the same as the rule for web design in general: Make it user-friendly!

There are a few important things you should do in order to improve your search engine ranking:
• Your title tag should have keywords that meaningfully describe your page. Note that this "title" refers to the one in the 'head' section of your document, not the one displayed in your browser window.

• The description meta tag may also influence the ranking of your page for specific search terms. This means, presumably, that if someone searches for a particular keyword, and it appears in your description and title tags, Google will accord that page a higher rank.

• Keyword density is important to Google. This probably means that if someone searches for "search engine ranking" and your page has many instances of those three words in sequence, your page is considered more relevant than another page with those three individual words scattered all over the page.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) The Myth?

Search Engine Optimization. Big words. Sounds Important. What is it? If you do a search in google for the web definition of search engine optimization, you get a lot of different results.

Some simply say that search engine optimization is the generic term for making sure your site is optimized to appear as one of the top ranking web sites on a search.

Others get more detailed with their definition and say search engine optimization is the term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a web site to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken.

A number of factors are important when optimizing a web site, including the content and structure of the web site's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.

Is it important? That also depends on which definition you believe and who you ask that question to. If you ask someone who runs a business and charges for search engine optimization, they will tell you it is the most important thing you will ever do for your website.

At each SEO website, they will tell you they are the number 1 SEO company on the web, even though each of them has a completely different method of optimizing your website.

If you ask many self-appointed webmaster gurus in some of the webmaster forums, they will tell you the same thing, then each one will tell you a different way to do it and they will all disagree on the most important aspects of search engine optimization.

So the confusion continues for the average user and the SEO companies love it that way. If the consumer doesn't understand what you are doing, you don't really have to do very much and just say you are doing a lot. Most of them would never work on your website on a contingency payment plan, one based on actual results and performance. Some say money back guaranteed, but read the fine print.

A lot of these businesses are based on the fact that people who are new to the web and even some of those who have been online for awhile do not know what search engine optimization is. They know that with more and more people coming onto the web for the first time, their business is secure. They can continue to tell people that without their service the website will fail.

I'm not saying all search engine optimization companies are rip-offs. Some of them really do their best to get good rankings for their clients and know what they are doing. A lot of them still really believe that search engine optimization is the key to success on the web.

It isn't. How's that for a statement? I know a lot of web designers will disagree. I know a lot of SEO companies will disagree. But simply put, search engine optimization of your WebPages is not the most important thing you need to do to succeed on the web.

Let's break down some of the things that are included in the phrase search engine optimization.

Metatags are one of the things these gurus tell you is important. Metatags are all but dead. Search engines, especially google, ignore metatags for the most part.

Having them in does not hurt you, but go do a search on any topic besides web design or search engine optimization, etc. and you'll find that IF the websites at the top of the search results have metatags at all, they usually only have the description and keywords metatags.

Well they also have the title tag, which is sometimes referred to as a metatag, but it is actually the only metatag you need to have.

Keyword Optimization is something the gurus will tell you is very important. Some will tell you they know the exact percentage of text that should be your keywords. Yes, keywords are very important. Do they know what percentage the search engines will want to read for the best results? No.

When writing copy for your website, you must be conscious of the keywords you wish to promote. Don't pick too many keywords and try to optimize each page of your website for twenty different things. If you do, it will not be relevant for any of them. That isn't guru talk, that's just plain old fashioned common sense.

Remember that search engines crawl web pages, not web sites. If you choose just one or two keywords per webpage that you wish that page to be optimized for, then you can optimize the page easily and write text the user will want to actually read.

Write your sales text the way you would with only the user in mind and with making sales in mind. Then go back and reread the page.

Find places where you can add in your keyword without destroying the flow you created when you wrote the text in the first place.

Now, do you need to hire an SEO company to do that? Do you know your product? Do you know how to sell your product? Then you need to write the text. If you do not wish to write the text, then hire a writer. You still don't need a search engine optimization guru.

Some search engine optimization experts will tell you they can increase your link popularity. They use a variety of methods. They create websites where they put all of their clients website links so you will have links to your website. The search engines call these link farms and discount any value they may have had in the past.

Those methods, along with many others, are simply tricks that temporarily work. Alot of search engine optimization companies all keep up with the latest tricks and shortcuts. They may even get you some good results in the short-term. But what happens when the search engines catch onto the trick?

I'm glad you asked. They stop letting that trick or shortcut work. They may even penalize the websites that used it. They penalize you, the customer, not the search engine optimization guru who used the trick and charged you for it.

Whenever one of these companies tells you it has "inside information", "ex-search engine company employees", "guaranteed search engine placement", guaranteed top 10 placement", or "secret methods", a red flag should go up in your mind right away.

If you start a business offline, like a restaurant or a store, you know that besides the money you will have to put up, you will also have to work to make it a success. It is no different when you start a business online. You have to work at it, if you want to be successful.

If search engine optimization is not the most important thing you can do to become successful, what is? Again, I'm glad you asked.

Promotion. Do not depend solely on being found by the search engines. Search engines are fickle creatures and what is today's #1 can be tomorrow's #100 just because they decided to change the way they give relevance to websites. Continually chasing this dream is a total waste of time.

There are other sources of traffic out there. Would you rather have 1000 hits from a search engine for one of your minor keywords or have 100 hits from someone who read an article you wrote and came to your website because they liked what you had
to say?

If you chose the thousand hits, you don't get it yet. Out of that 1000 hits you might convert 2 of them into sales. Out of the 100, you may get as many as 20-25 people who want to buy from you. Conversion rate is more important than how many hits you get to your website.

Write articles about your website, about your products, about relevant topics to your products or services you wish to sell. Distribute or submit those articles to article submission websites that provide free content to webmasters.

You may write one article like the one I am writing now and have 100 webmasters want to use it as content for their website. That would mean there is suddenly 100 other websites on topics related to your product that now contain a link to your website. (see the footer below contains links to my website and is to be included when this article is reprinted.)

That increases your link popularity without the need for a company to optimize you. Just by submitting your article to several article submission websites, you increase your link popularity, but when those webmasters start to republish your articles, you will see a huge increase in your page rank and the quality of your traffic.

Some people write one article per month and others write one or more per day. It depends on you. How fast do you want your website to grow?

How much time do you have to invest? If you are not good at writing articles or do not have the time, hire a writer to ghost-write them for you with your byline and your links in
the footer.

So that we are clear. Search engine optimization is necessary, but by no means the most important thing you can do for your website to make it successful. I would not pay a lot of money for this service. Promoting your website IS the most important thing you can do. Articles are just one of the methods you can use to promote your website.

Advertising, buying links on relevant websites, posting in forums and blogs with related topics, putting your link in your signature line, are some of the other ways you can promote your website.

My Checklist:

1. Be conscious of the keywords you wish to target with each webpage you build. Write your text for the reader, then go back and add your keywords without destroying the flow of your text.

2. Make sure the website is easy to navigate and user-friendly. Don't assume the customer knows the web site as well as you do. Make it simple. Make it easy to find the buy button!

3. Once the website is built, quit worrying about the newest search engine trick or optimization technique as some like to call it.

4. Search for blogs and forums with related topics and sign up for them and participate in discussions with your link in your signature line.

5. Write articles about related topics and submit them everywhere or buy a service like isnare.com that will do the submissions for you. If you cannot write the articles, hire someone to do it for you.

6. Don't do link trades with websites that have less traffic than you do. Buy links on websites that have more traffic than you and are on a topic related to your products or services.

This article in no way claims to have listed all the ways you can use to promote your website. What I have done here is tried to explain to you what is or is not important to creating and maintaining a successful website. I hope this helps you.

The Water Birds of East Africa

Birding is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world. In America, bird watchers rose from 21 m in 1982, to an astonishing 68 million in 2000. In the US, birding is now the second most popular outdoor recreation after gardening. Technology advances have made this hobby more fun and appealing. It is now easier with powerful binoculars and other equipment to view birds from a distance. And Global Positioning Systems have improved navigation in unfamiliar places. Parents are also able to amuse their youngsters by luring birds from the bush with recordings of bird songs.

Africa is a treasure house for birding. The continent has over 2,050 bird species recorded, two thirds of which are found nowhere else. East Africa, in particular, has an amazing variety of birds, perhaps due to a mild climate devoid of extremes. The region has 4 of the Top Ten Birding Sites in Africa as rated by the African Bird Club (www.africanbirdclub.org) -an international organisation devoted to the study of Africa's birds. These sites are: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda), Bale Mountains (Ethiopia), the Rift Valley Lakes (Kenya) and Murchison Falls Park (Uganda).

East Africa's birds are scattered in all sorts of habitats: mountain forest, lowland forest, seacoast, deserts, savannah, lakes, marsh, swamps and mudflats. In this article, we shall look at the region's water birds. This category refers to those birds that depend directly on water for food, habitat and breeding or indirectly for a certain component of their life cycle. Most water birds linger along the shallow shoreline of lakes, temporary waters in the inland ecosystems and rivers and very few venture far away from shore. Water birds delight birders, being easier to spot and photograph, as they tend to be larger and live more in the open.

Flamingo's, on account of their size and huge numbers rank as East Africa's foremost water birds. Out of a world population of about 4 million, an estimated 95 % reside in East Africa. Flamingos are found only in saline water, and East Africa's Rift Valley lakes are their favourite habitat, particularly Manyara and Natron in Tanzania and Nakuru and Baringo in Kenya. Small populations are also found in Lake Abiata in Ethiopia and at the Etosha Pans of Namibia.

The flamingo is very biologically unique among wildlife species. It is highly gregarious and lives in large groups. In Kenya's Rift Valley Lakes, up to one million birds have been known to gather- forming the largest bird flocks anywhere. The birds are characterised by pink plumage, which is especially thick on the underside of the feathers and is gracefully exposed during flight. Young flamingos are however more grey than pink - they turn full pink at sexual maturity. You are then likely to see them in courtship displays that look like mock fights.

Flamingos' beaks are S shaped and pink in colour, while the legs are straight and webbed to facilitate wading in water. They feed on microscopic blue green algae plants that only thrive in saline waters. These plants are suspended in water and to extract a meal they swallow large volumes of water, which is filtered by the beak through specialised anatomical devices. For this reason, flamingos are said to be filter feeders, a status they share with a number of other aquatic animals.

Lake Natron on the Kenya-Tanzania border is the principal breeding ground of East Africa's flamingos. Scientists do not know for sure why they don't breed in the other alkaline lakes. But research indicates that Natron is favoured on account of its ecological stability and minimal human disturbance. By reason of its remoteness in location, it has recorded little change in soil chemistry - a critical factor in nest formation.

At Lake Natron, incubation of eggs takes about 3 weeks, after which the mothers fly back to their preferred habitat, mostly Nakuru, Baringo and Manyara. About a week later, the hatchlings usually follow their mothers northwards.

There are two types of flamingos, the greater and lesser flamingos. The casual observer may be unable to tell them apart. But the greater flamingo is considerably larger and has a whiter plumage. The majority of flamingos in East Africa are of the lesser species. The greater flamingos feed on invertebrates like molluscs and crustaceans. This is the ecological factor that may largely explain their smaller numbers in relation to lesser flamingos, which are primary consumers in the food chain.

The pelican is the other bird likely to be found in large aggregations in East Africa's wetlands. These are large, stout birds with large white beaks specially adapted for catching and swallowing fish. Most fresh water lakes in East Africa are generously stocked with pelicans. You will see them swimming most gently and graciously as they search for fish, their primary food. They habitually swim in a team of 3 and offer a spectacular show as they dive for fish rhythmically and simultaneously.

Though a saltwater lake, pelicans abound in Lake Nakuru, where over 44,000 have been recorded. They are a dazzling sight to behold as they spiral upwards in huge columns. In Kenya they only breed at Lake Elementaita. Pelicans are found in plenty round river mouths hosting high fish populations. Other popular sites to see them in East Africa include Kazinga Channel in Uganda and Lake Victoria.

Cormorants are a bird species closely associated with pelicans. Of these, the most common type is the greater cormorant. Cormorants are mostly grey and black and are usually slightly smaller and less gregarious than pelicans. They favour lakeshores well sheltered by vegetation; they feed on fish and other aquatic invertebrates and breed in trees close by. For this reason, cormorants are less easy to sight than pelicans.

Cormorants have been observed swimming under water in pursuit of fish. After making a catch, they emerge from water and resume their lofty positions on the banks. You will see them at East Africa's inland waters, and especially Kenya's Rift Valley lakes.

Herons and storks constitute a large category of water birds. Herons are tall slim birds with long forward pointing necks and elongated stout beaks. There are about 10 species of herons in East Africa, the most commonly sighted being the Goliath heron, the Grey heron and Black-headed heron. The Goliath heron, as the name suggests, is a huge bird that can attain an overall length of 5 feet.

With few exceptions, herons are mostly sighted around marshes and shallow waters, but can also be seen around inland grassy habitats. Their favourite menu includes snakes and other small vertebrates that live in wet areas. One of the herons -the Green-backed heron is noted for its use of the advanced technique of baiting fish with live insect. Herons are quite common throughout East Africa.

The shape of the beak distinguishes storks, and from this feature they derive their name. With about 10 species around East Africa, only the Marabou stork and the white stork are not directly water dependent. Marabou storks are very large and unlike the other storks fly with head and neck retracted. This bird is quite common in the urban areas where it feeds on refuse and carrions, and hence its dirty reputation.

Marabou storks are also common around water shores where they target fish and other small and young animals especially the weak and injured. They are thus happiest in areas with high populations of other birds, such as flamingos. Another unique stork is the Saddle-billed stork, easily noticeable due to its red beak with a black patch at the middle and yellow base. This stork is quite common in shallow waters and swampy areas.

The Hamerkop is a popular medium size bird associated with storks. Its name is derived from the Afrikaans word for hammerhead, the shape formed by its head and beak. They are common all over East Africa's wetlands. It is uniquely popular among bird watchers on account of its massive nests. Built with lots of dry vegetation, the nests average a depth of 1.5 m, and can take upto 6 weeks to complete.

Undaunted by the labour of putting up the ostentatious nest, hamerkops go on to build as many as 6 nests in a territory. The mystery is that they occupy only one! This apparently irrational behaviour is not lost to other birds; Egyptian geese and Verraux eagle owls frequently take over some of the nests. Thus the saying that you cannot tell a bird's size from its nest rings most true with hamerkops.

The Shoebills and Spoonbills are two other species of water birds that are uniquely identified by their beaks. The shoebill is a large and dark grey bird that looks almost prehistoric. The bill is shaped like - you guessed it- a shoe. It is often found in large swamps but is not easily sighted.

The spoonbill derives its name from the shape of its beak, whose posterior part enlarges into a "spoon". The most common type is the African spoonbill, which is well distributed in East Africa especially around the shallow ranges of large water bodies and swamps. As it wades in shallow water, it uses the sensitive inner bill surface to sense food- usually fish, frogs and snails.

In the East African wetlands, you are definitely bound to come across one or two species of ibises. They have narrow beaks of almost uniform thickness that curve forwards and slightly taper at the end. The sacred ibis is the most common and usually has a black and white neck and beak. They tend to be gregarious and are mostly found around marshlands and lagoons.

Another common ibis is the hadada ibis. It is usually grey and has a glossy patch on both sides of wing coverts. They stand out on the basis of the loud distinctive calls they make during flight. They are at their most vocal at dawn and dusk. They are quite common throughout East Africa around wooded streams, marshes, lagoons and moist grasslands.

The hadada ibis is surrounded by many legends among African communities. It is often associated with long life and witchcraft. Among the Kikuyu of Kenya, a person of advanced age is said to be as old as Kagogo, the vernacular reference to the hadada ibis. Indeed Kenya's leading writer, Ngugi wa Thiongo has recently published a novel titled in Kikuyu Murogi wa Kagogo, literary "The Witch of the Hadada Ibis". Conceding that this ibis has a rather haunted look, my considered opinion is that this is not sufficient ground to sustain such a serious charge as witchcraft.

In the wetlands of East Africa, also lives the crane, which is often called crested crane. Several species exist, but the crested crane -sometimes referred to as the Uganda crane- is the most common. It is mostly found in tall grasses and cultivated areas, but breeds mainly in wet areas such as marshes. The crane is widespread in Uganda's numerous swamps and estuaries and is indeed the national symbol.

Despite sitting on Uganda's court of arms, the elegant crested crane is considered endangered. In most parts of East Africa, suitable breeding habitats are increasingly being converted to agricultural use and the crane is now confined to very few areas. In addition, the crane has a most peculiar social behaviour, which in some way further jeopardises its long-term survival. Cranes practice true and perhaps absolute monogamy. Often, they are found in pairs and share strong bonds that are never broken, even unto death. When one of a pair dies, the other never pairs up again for the rest of its life.

The African Jacana is another bird that has unique social and mating behaviour. It is one of very few in the animal kingdom that exhibit "reverse polygamy", -technically known as polyandry, where females date and mate with multiple males. Under this practice females are always busy. The female starts off mating with one male, which it leaves incubating the eggs, then shamelessly hops off for an encounter with another male and so on and on.

The way the African Jacana brings forth young ones is highly specialised and rather shocking from the perspective of humans. It is easily recognisable by its purple-brown plumage and yellow chest. You will find it in wetlands especially shallow lakes, ponds and swamps.

The plovers are also associated with lakeshores and big swamps. The most common types are the blacksmith plover, kittlitz's plover and spur-winged plover. The blacksmith is named after its sharp, distinctive extra high "metallic" voice that will remind you of the goings on in a blacksmith shop. This is usually an alarm call whose pitch is raised when a threat stalks her eggs or chicks. You will find plenty of blacksmith and spur-winged plovers at Amboseli.

Geese are also very common in lakes and ponds throughout East Africa. The most common type is the Egyptian goose. This bird is thoroughly adapted and can even be found in shallow waters in cities. Africa's largest waterfowl is the spur-winged goose, which can reach a length of 100 cm. You can sight it at the swamps of Amboseli and in the marsh areas of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

Most people on safari are after the big five- lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. But you will get more value if you can also look out for the birds. Unless you are a really specialised bird watcher, you will get to see the common water birds on a classic wildlife safari, especially in Kenya. As lots of birds are found outside national parks, real birding enthusiasts opt for a custom itinerary accompanied by expert bird guides.

East Africa is a year round safari destination. The rains come around April- May and November-December. This however does not much affect the travellers' ability to get around. Generally the best time to go on safari is over the drier months when the grass is short and sighting animals is so much easier. The peak season falls around January to February and July to August. April to June is the low season and prices for accommodation in the lodges can fall by as much as 40% compared to the busy season.

On safari, wear light cottons and linen. Warmer clothing is needed for the evenings and for your early morning game drive. Some rainwear is advisable between March and June and October and December. You should bring along a decent pair of sunglasses. The glare you experience in bright tropical light is a new and uncomfortable experience for most. You should also pack a good pair of binoculars to bring the birds and other animals closer.

Search Engines And The Gurus

People do not change just because they are on the web. They are still the same people they were before the Internet became a popular phenomenon. Some are arrogant. Some are nice. Some are mean. Others are modest. The list of traits is the same for people everywhere.

The above paragraph is true, except for one breed that was specifically created post-Internet. The Search Engine or Webmaster Guru is the Internet's equivalent of Frankenstein's monster.

These are the guys, and in some instances gals, that really believe in their mind that they above all others believe they know everything there is to know about the web and if you ever disagree with them, then you must just be stupid.

You've seen this animal. They lurk in webmaster forums and give everyone advice they themselves never use or follow. They are not millionaires and few are even modestly successful at anything on the web besides telling other website owners what to do.

They build websites that give more advice. They write articles. There is nothing wrong with giving out advice. There is nothing wrong with participating in forums. There is nothing wrong with writing articles like I am doing right now.

The Gurus I am talking about are those that do nothing else. They do not contribute to the overall quality of the web by building websites that have content people want to see. They don't actually run a business, but like to tell others how they should be running theirs.

They make all of their money by charging you to help you run your business. They sell ebooks about how to run an online business, but do not have one themselves, except for selling you their ebook.

They charge you for search engine optimization. I am not saying that there is absolutely no need for search engine optimization. I am telling you that the Gurus simply put way too much emphasis on things like alt tags, metatags, filenames, keyword density percentages, and other things that make them sound smarter than everyone else who doesn't know exactly how to do those things.

However, all of the information you need is out there on the Internet for free. You too can be a search engine optimization Guru. Spend about two days reading all the free information available about search engine optimization and you will probably have your own ebook for sale tomorrow.
Yes, I said two days. That is all that subject is worth in my honest opinion. You build your website, include keywords in your text without spamming them, use a few words in your alt tags if you want, ignore metatags altogether or limit it to title, keywords and description metatags, and you're done with that.

You want to really optimize your website for the search engines? Promotion is the key. Getting link popularity, writing articles, adding content to update your website regularly, commenting on forums and blogs about things related to your website, writing articles, those are the things that will help you be successful on the web.

The next time you see one of these search engine optimization gurus posting in a forum, ask them what else they do besides giving advice to other people. Ask them if they have any websites that are about anything else besides giving advice to others about how to run their business or sell their products and services.

Ask them if they have any business websites that sell products and services like your own. If they say yes, ask for links. Check the PR on their business websites. If they do not have better PR than you for websites that sell products other than search engine optimization Guru drivel, then should you really be listening to them?

In general, they want you to believe it takes a specific talent to understand how search engines work and how to build websites that are properly optimized for the search engines. They want you to believe that you should constantly be optimizing that one website for each little change that google or other search engines make.

Spend your time promoting your website. I tell all my clients, spend 30% of your time and money to build your website and 70% on promoting it when they are first starting out. After the website is built, I tell them to spend 10% of their time optimizing their website, and by that I mean adding content to it, and 90% of their time promoting their website.

If you wanted a magic formula, there it is. It is hard work. There are no magic pills or shortcuts. Promotion is the key. Search Engine Optimization Gurus are the dinosaurs of the Internet and soon to be extinct.

Custom Embroidery

There are a number of companies available that offer custom embroidery for chairs, cabinets, and other furniture. If you are hosting a trade show, adding your company logo to seats and other furniture will give your event a highly professional look. Using custom embroidery for the furniture in your home will greatly enhance the decorations. When you send in artwork or logos that you want used on your custom embroidery, there are a number of important guidelines you will want to follow. If the quality of the artwork is low, this can cause the project to take longer, and the final product may not be impressive.

The first thing you will want to do is decide what method you want for your embroidery. While some people choose embroidery, others will choose silk screen prints. Embroidery is good for people who have simple logos that are easy to design. It is also a good option for those who don't want to use large sizes. In addition to this, embroidery will often be much more cost effective than using silk screen prints. Some companies will charge a digitizing fee when they transfer your file into one that can be read by a embroidery machine. While embroidery is known for its strength and durability, the lines may not be as clean as you would get with silk screens.

If you want to decorate more than one chair, it will be more expensive to use embroidery rather than silk screen printing. The reason for this is because the design will need to be sewn on each chair. Silk screening is excellent for logos or designs that are complex. The designs will be clean because it is being printed on a surface. Silk screen printing may be cheaper than embroidery for decorating certain types of furniture. If you want to use embroidery, you will want to make sure you submit your design in a high quality .tif file. Before the design can be placed on your furnitue, the file will need to be digitized. While .dst files can work, many companies will not be able to alter or resize them

When you are looking to have custom embroidery made, it is important to make sure you only use solid colors. Halftones or gradient colors cannot be properly printed on embroidery. Once you have an image that can be digitized, you can have it placed on jackets, bags, hats, and other objects. Your design is not limited to just furniture. When you submit your information to a company, it is important for you to be specific about what you want. A good company can create custom embroidery for virtually any design. This is an excellent option for companies who want to create custom uniforms for their employees, or people who want custom designed embroidery for a specific event.

Whether you need custom embroidery for your home, event, or business, it will provide you with a professional look that will grab the attention of virtually everyone that sees it.

Seven Common SEO Mistakes

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Most of your quality traffic comes from search engines, therefore when building a website it is important to know the hints, tips and tricks that will give you better placement in the search engines. Mistakes can actually hurt your site in the search engines without you even realizing it. I have come across a number of websites in which beginners not yet familiar with search engine optimization make the same common mistakes.

Are you making these seven common mistakes too?
  • Irrelevant keywords: Many webmasters use irrelevant Keywords. Be sure to choose the right keywords that relate to your company. Be specific. Think about the words that web surfers will be typing to find your website. Inventory overture keyword selector Tool is one of the best-known services for helping you choose the right keywords. Use Inventory overture keyword selector Tool to find what people are actually typing in to the search engines.
  • No back links: Back links are extremely important to your website's rankings, therefore this should be one of your main priorities. The easiest way to get back links is to ask for them. Visit sites related to your website and request a link exchange.
  • Bad web design: Design mistakes can hurt your website. A mistake that I found many new webmasters making is they are not building their website to ensure that it appears correctly at different screen resolutions. Your website will be the first impression and remember that first impressions are everything. Can you afford to loose visitors because your website isn't viewing correctly on their monitor? I for one use a screen resolution of 800 x 600. If you design your site to be viewable only by a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, I have an annoying horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the page and I have to scroll horizontally, just to see the entire content of your page. That right there is a turn off. There are many other web design mistakes, but we'll cover that in another article.
  • Overuse of images and flash animations/ having too many graphics on your page: While graphics and flash may be pleasing to the eyes, too many graphics won't help you get a better ranking. In fact Google and other search engines cannot read the content of an image. Flash only pages have no text; therefore there is nothing for the search engines to read.
  • Not utilizing your Title Tag: Title Tags are really important for search engines. A common mistake that I see many new webmasters making is that they leave the title tag empty or use irrelevant words. Your title tag is the first thing a search engine's spider sees on your page. You shouldn't put only your company name in the title tag, but ad keywords about your company. Use Inventory overture keyword selector Tool to find related keywords.
  • 6. No alt <> attribute in tags: As I stated above, search engines cannot spider images. Therefore the alt image tag helps the search engines understand the subject of the image. Be sure to include the alt attribute with every image.
  • 7. Bad anchor ext: Whatever you do, don't use "click here" or other non-descriptive link text. I'm guilty of this one myself. Proper anchor text can help your ranking. Your anchor text should describe the page that you're linking to. For example if you're linking to this article, your anchor text might read, "Seven Common SEO Mistakes by Rose DesRochers" instead of "Click Here to read this article." Anchor text is extremely important to your ranking.

These are just a few of the most common mistakes that you should avoid making. These SEO mistakes may be the main reason why your site is failing to rank well in the search engines.

Be sure to optimize your website for both search engines and people. Search engine optimization is hard work and an ongoing process. Invest a little time and learn the proper techniques and not only will your traffic come, but you'll increase your page rank.

Scrapbooking Tips

Have you ever found a very old family photo album, perhaps in your grandparent's house, and had no idea who the people in the photographs were? Sometimes no one remembers who they are, and a part of your family history is lost forever.

One of the most frustrating things about finding old photos or old albums is the lack of information in them. Often there is nothing to identify the photos. No names, no dates, no locations.

One way to keep that from happening with the albums that you create is to take the time to journal in them. Today, creating photo albums has become an art form known as scrapbooking. These scrapbooks are more than just photos on a page. They are family histories, meant to be handed down from generation to generation.

Journaling is important for several reasons. First of all, it will provide valuable genealogical information for future generations. Secondly, journaling is a way for you to make sure the stories of your life and your family's life are persevered. Also, it allows those with whom you share your albums to look through them without having to have you narrate through the entire album. They can take their time to browse through the album, enjoying the photos and reading the captions and stories.

What do you need to journal in your album? You need to have acid free, permanent pens that are created for scrapbooking. It's important to choose these types of pens because they are photo safe. They will not damage the surrounding photos as time passes. You may want to have pens in a variety of colors or just black. The colors you use, however, are not as important as getting the words on the page.

At the very least you should write identifying information associated with your photos. This would be people's names and who they were in relationship to you. It could be as simple as "My cousin Jack White, "our neighbor Bill Smith," or "my co-worker and good friend Jill Jones." Identifying people with a little more information than just their names will be helpful to those looking through your albums. Other important identifying information would be dates and locations.

In addition to identifying information, many people choose to go further in their journaling. They tell stories that go along with the photographs. These can be short paragraphs that highlight what was going on or entire pages of written memories.

If you're new to journaling and unsure how to fit it into your album, try some of these tips:

Lists are great to put in an album instead of just straight paragraphs. For example, if you are doing an album for a toddler you can make lists of their favorite things – food, books, toys, tv programs, songs, etc. and sprinkle them throughout the album where there are blank spaces.

Ask others to write in your albums. Get your kid's dad to write his point of view of his fourth birthday party. Have a friend you took a trip with write her thoughts on the trip.

Use poems or quotes that are appropriate to fill in some blank spaces. Have a little white space left on the page of Halloween pictures? Find a cute pumpkin poem to fill it in.

Whether you choose to simply write in the important identifying information or go a step further and tell stories with your albums, journaling will make your albums more personal. It will also leave future generations with valuable information that they will be grateful for.

I'm addicted to taking pictures of my cats, is this a hobby or an addiction

I know it seems like a weird question, but I just love taking pictures of my cats, if they're inside and I have my phone/camera I just HAVE to take a photo of them! Is this an addiction or a hobby that can have useful purposes later in my life

It seems to me that this is something you may want to have a future in. You obviously LOVE doing it and want to do it every chance you get, so why not go forward with that in your life? I love taking pictures of my cats too.

If I wanted to take up photography as a hobby, what would you recommend

I'm not exactly the artistic type and I don't have any expensive photographic equipment. However, I've been thinking about getting into photography as a hobby - using a digital camera, not film. I currently have a 5.0 MP camera with a 3x optical zoom. I've played around a bit with the various features and learned how to take decent pictures in various conditions. And I do have a decent tripod.

I guess one of my main questions is whether I should immediately try to buy a digital SLR camera or if the one I have would be adequate to start.

And once I am taking pictures, are there specific subjects or concepts I should focus on. Or is it more just getting out there and taking pictures?

You dont say your location, but if you are in the UK most tech colleges do a cousre in photography and it is not to costly.
I did it last year and it was brilliant, and the college supplies 99% of the equipment too.
Enjoy

Is decorating your house a hobby

I see people with hobbies and I admire them...I don't have one....but I love to decorate my house....Is that my hobby

Wife works in a home decor/furniture store...decorating our home and a few friends' is definitely her hobby. She starts at one end and by the time she finishes, she starts thinking about doing it over again.

I am bored what other hobbies can I get

I have done a lot of sewing, needlework, jewelry making, beading, and reading in the past and I am not that interested in those anymore. I don't have children nor travel so I cannot scrapbook. I am not into photography and I took art already and I am not that talented in that.

I need a new hobby or craft so I was hoping some people would have suggestions on here.

You might try round loom knitting with kits called Knifty Knitter round looms. They are not like regular knitting with needles. They are very easy to learn and fun to do. They are not very expensive and you can get them at any craft store or online in kits. With them you can make lots of things like hats, scarves, socks, blankets, etc. There are great tutorials and instructions online on you tube for loom knitting. Below are some other sites for you if you decide that you want to try this.
So you have tried a bunch of things but they just don't light your fire. If any were more interesting than others it could point you in a new direction. How about something totally different? Philanthropy. There are tons of non profit organizations that need help in today's economy. Picking one out and supporting it financially can be a terrific hobby. What, you say you can't afford it? Well you can help raise money from other people, talk them into contributing or just give your time. Try it out, it could be rewarding.
How about creating Artist Trading Cards? This activity is perfect for any age and any art ability. Get your friends involved and trade with them. Determine a theme, and then create Artist Trading Cards based on that theme. For example, one theme could be "Fantasy" and you could draw anything that you can think up, like unrealistic creatures. Another theme could be "Things that make you feel good" and you could create cards that include whatever in life makes you feel wonderful, like sewing, or games, etc. You could even create your own virtual world on Artist Trading Cards! By creating the themes, you are challenging yourself to think in creative ways. Artist Trading Cards don't have to just be things you draw, either. You can paint or use other embellishments to create miniature works of art. The possibilities are endless! And because the trading cards are so small, they are easy to create and make a wonderful hobby. Artist Trading Cards are fun for people of all ages

I need a hobby what should i do

You could try taking up knitting or crochet..

Very inexpensive a little tricky to learn but fun, creative and if you make stuffed toys like me you'll have a new fluffy friend :)

of you do take this up I would reccomend crochet if you don't know how to crochet or knit as in my opinion crochet is easier to learn if you type into YouTube tjw1963 she's a woman who teaches crochet, she's really good and I've learned a lot from her

use an interest in those things as an energy driving force to enable you to reach a gaol.
for example we Can join a local stage company or theatre group.
look locally at groups doing things with writing and books or writing short stories etc. help out at a vets or animal welfare centre.
take up cooking lessons at classes locally .
join a club or two whom has interests you really like. maybe a pet ? or a companion will keep you busy

What are the rules about hobby rocket launches in public parks

I am interested in hobby rockets. What are the rules about launching them in a park or other clearing? Do I have to get allowance from the local police/fire department or town hall? I'm in the Milwaukee area.

The flying of model rockets may not be allowed in public parks in some cities. You should check with local authorities first. In all cases, you should have the permission of the landowner before flying rockets on private property.

Model Rockets - No restrictions. Just use common sense and follow the safety code. Rocket must weigh less than one (1) pound at liftoff and contain less than the equivalent of two (2) G-class engines.

Large Model Rockets - FAA notification required. Rockets that weigh more than one (1) pound at liftoff but less than 3.3 pounds require you to notify the FAA. These rockets may use up through one (1) H-class engine

Since most people do not have a large pasture for a backyard, many people begin flying at a local school or park but be sure to get permission from the proper authority before you take to the skies. It might be helpful to get aquatinted with your local fire codes as well. If possible locate and visit the nearest NAR club. They will have a good field, tons of information about flying and welcome you with open arms. It is always more fun flying with a group than by yourself.

I have to take a series of pictures that portray how photography has evolved as a skill, art or hobby.

Do you have a film camera? You could take a series of shots in black and white film, to show where it started. Then use colour film for how photography developed into colour. Then you could take a series of digital shots to show where it is today.

A picture that portrays a hobby can be any picture that could be taken normally. such as a picture of you and a friend together. And then do it again but more developed maybe with a more unique artificial lighting to show the skill that can be delivered

Maybe you could take a picture that you really like, maybe one of a landscape or one of you and a few of your friends. You could edit it online to show what the photo would of looked like if it was taken back when cameras were first invented and then continue to edit the original after photography and cameras evolved. you'll have a series of pictures at the end of it literally showing how photography has evolved.

I don't know what your resources are, but you should know someone that has an old 8mm camera, projector or 35mm slide projector and camera. If your lucky, you know where you can photograph darkroom equipment from the film spools and tank to enlargers and print. In my opinion, the thing that makes what could only be done by a few (serious photographers, business, and rich enthusiast) to the masses (hobbyist) is $$$. If you look at the expense of the equipment and compare the results, high end photography is affordable when you go digital. You can pull out an old photo album or box of photos no one hardly looks at and compare it to computer screen savers of family photos, emails with attachment. The darkroom is the computer and you can take it anywhere.

Once you get your mind around the subject, the difficulty will not be what you should take a picture of but how to narrow it down to tell the story in the best way.

What's a good hobby for improving manual dexterity for surgery

What enjoyable hobbies/activities are there that would improve skills relevant to surgery?
Anything that requires fine motor skills. A fascinating hobby that I took up over 40 years ago was watchmaking. I did it as a hobby at first, repairing railroad pocket watches. Eventually, I actually became a pretty darned skilled watch repairman. and actually made a few dollars on the side (but that wasn't my primary goal). I mainly did it as a "Zen" thing, to focus my mind and body on something requiring microscopic dexterity and total relaxation. To say that developed fine motor control is the understatement of the year. I can thread the eye of the tiniest needle today (with the help of a magnifying loupe, of course). You might also look into building model planes, or model trains, or perhaps constructing electronics kits. All these things require fine motor controls.

What are the first steps to taking up photography as a hobby

I'm really interested in taking up photography as a hobby, maybe even side job. I'm looking for some advice or pointers to get started. What kind of camera to get, different learning methods......all and all how to improve. Right now, I'm looking into getting a Nikon S4000 or a D60. Any advice would be helpful especially about what camera to get.

In order to master photography either as a hobby or as a professional, you need to be able to master light. However I won't go into that now but what I will share with you a three really handy tips.

First, think about what you want to do first. For example do you want to do landscape photography? Perhaps you are more interested in portrait photography? By determining what it is that you and you want to do with photography you can then start searching for the type of camera that will best suit your interest.

Secondly I recommend that when you are searching through camera don't just look at the camera but also it is extremely important to look at the quality of the lens. You can be the best photographer in the world but if you do not have the sharpness and depth of quality in your lens you will not get the detail and the brilliance in your photos.

Thirdly it is important to nurture your visual artistic skills. This can be caught up to a certain point, as many of my student’s experience, but it is very important to have a real feel for how things look in your photograph.

Which hobby/project should I choose

Over the past few weeks, I've been thinking a lot about taking up an independent project or a hobby. I seem to have more free time than I know what to do with.

I've brainstormed a bunch of ideas, and four in particular seemed to resonate with me. The problem is that I like all of them equally, and I can't figure out which to do first.

The point of this is to get my ideas out of my head, and to get some feedback. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. =)

So without further adieu;

Idea the First!

Writing a completely original mythology.

Pros:

- It's something that I've wanted to do since I was a kid.
- It requires no extra resources or talents, just time and patience.
- The scope of this idea is reasonable condensed... Unlike Idea the Second! and Idea the Third!, there is a good chance that I could finish this one.

Cons:

- I only have a few very rough ideas.
- Coming up with something original will be very difficult (I'm not much of an idea man).
- While not outright bad, I'm not a particularly strong writer.

Idea the Second!

Creating a video game that incorporates classic RPG elements within the game of chess.

Pros:
- I think that this game has the potential to be very fun, both to make and to play.
- This project is huge, and will help me occupy my time for months, if not longer.

Cons:
- This project is huge! There is a good chance that it will end up abandoned.
- If I were to make it, I would want to do it in 3d. I have very limited experience with 3d modeling, and next to none with 3d game engines.
- There are a large number of elements to this game that I have no clue how to do (i.e. sound production, 3d animation, etc.) I would either have to learn a lot of new skills, or I would have to find people who already know how to do these things.
- There is a potential for this project to cost a fair amount of money (i.e. server, software development kits, professional consultants, etc.)

Idea the Third!

Summary: A massive 'choose your own adventure'/text-based rpg.

Pros:
- This sounds like a great deal of fun. I get excited just thinking about this. =P
- The technological requirements and know-how are very practical. Programmatically, I already have the ability to make it. I won't have to learn anything new.
- This requires no graphical elements which will drastically reduce development time.
- If I were really crazy, I could combine this idea with Idea the First!.

Cons:
- Despite the technological simplicity of this idea, it is by far the biggest and most ambitious of the four ideas. After each scene, there needs to be a handful of potential choices... ideally, I would cover all the choices that a person could reasonably make. Each one would have its own fractal outcome. Each main quest line would, essentially, be dozens of novels rolled into one. This will either take me years to do right, or I need to consider accepting third-party story line submissions.
- While not outright bad, I'm not a particularly strong writer.

Idea the Last!

Summary: Learn how to read sheet music and how to properly play the piano.

Pros:
- This idea is the simplest.
- This idea is the most achievable.
- This idea is the most realistic.

Cons:
- This idea is the least exciting to me (don't get me wrong, I would love to learn to play the piano properly, but the other ideas are just so much more exciting...)

I mentioned an idea to a friend of a way he could make some money from his hobby

and now he is mentioning this on his website AND using my hobby as a part of the deal - and yet he has never said anything about this to me!

I'm really kind of upset about this.
He could at least say WE have had an idea - or mention that I was at least slightly instrumental in the whole thing - but he has chosen to keep the whole idea as his own.
I'm now wishing I had not bothered to come up with any idea to him and I'm feeling REALLY annoyed that he is using MY hobby as one of the areas of "his" idea!
How can I talk to this bloke again? All I really want to do is smack him one (or two) but this would not be a particularly adult way to proceed would it

Sit down with him and tell him that you're upset with what going on. And if he still doesn't listen *then* given em 2 hard slaps

How do I get my cat to eat wet cat food instead of dry cat food?

I have heard that dry cat food is bad for your cats health. My cat loves dry cat food and only eats a small amount of the wet cat food. I used to give her dry food in the mornings but now I have started to give her wet cat food as that would be the time when she is the most hungry. This morning she woke me up meowing becuase she was hungry and I fed her one of those small tins of cat food and she only ate half. An hour later she still didn't finish it. I gave her a small pile of dry cat food and she ran straight over and ate it. I don't think it is enough food for her to be eating only one small tin of cat food a day (half in the morning, half at night). She is already small and although her weight is okay, she really doesn't need to be any thinner.

Good for you! You're doing the right thing.

I went through this myself, and it took me two weeks.

First, be prepared to waste a bit of money. And to be patient.

Buy several different brands of food, and get different varieties of each. Offer a bit of that, and if your cat responds to any, make note of the brand and flavor. It may be that he'll like venison or turkey, or perhaps he'll like any flavor from a certain manufacturer.

You are right to switch gradually. I think you could continue what you're doing - offer the dry food once per day - give him 1/2 to 3/4 of what he would usually get. You could even break that into two meals although I don't think that really matters.

By reducing the amount of food, your cat still is getting food but will also still be hungry. And hunger can be a great inducer to try new things!

You could also try mixing some dry in with the canned.

Basically, you're doing the right thing. Just be patient and try other foods too.

How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They're more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn't cat food?

I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who's? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You can't say it's the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won't eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat's food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can't reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won't go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.

How do i train my dogs how to run a deer

I had 6 dogs already that ran deer but they were all lost last hunting season. I now have 8 walker dog puppies and i have never trained dogs myself how can i train them could i use deer scent or do i need a fur or should i buy an older dog already running deer

Some have it in their blood, but others need to be trained. Get them a deer hide to smell and chew on. Thake them out and put them on tracks to follow, and then, during the season, let them run with an experienced dog.

Housebreaking Outside vs Paper or Litter Training Dogs

Okay, I've read enough in this section to see that the choice to either outside housebreak or inside paper/potty patch/ litter box train a dog, especially the toy breeds, is met with a lot of strong opinions, often rudely put.

I feel it's a choice for the dog owner to make as far as how & where their dog eliminates.....and I can also see the pros and cons of ALL choices.

Outside housebreaking means the dog has to ASK to eliminate....do you have to ask? And communication can result in accidents
Plus, the pooch is often expected to 'hold it'.....are you forced to hold it? Or do you relieve yourself as soon as you are able-your choice.
Or is being a human give you this privilege while the dog doesn't get to be as privileged.

Yes, it's convenient for the owner...but what about the poor people who accidentally step in the mess when less than diligent dog owners fail to scoop the poop....besides being a public nuisance, it's a contaminant for other dogs and can cause, spread disease.

However, when an owner responds immediately to their dog's need to 'potty', and cleans up after the dog, I can certainly see the advantages to outside housebreaking.

...but

..if an owner makes the determination that circumstances would best be served with paper training, potty patches, or litter pans, and is just as diligent in cleaning up immediately after their pet, and the pet is well trained so it only eliminates where it's supposed to..who cares? Who is hurt by it?
Outside house break. Puppy padds start to become a hassel.

Classic car insurance

Any information on insuring a Classic truck would be helpful. Like the license plate thing I keep hearing about. I find an original plate and never have to change it again?

License plate information would be most helpful.....Maybe Help me figure out where to find a plate? :D 1989 Truck plate is what I will need.

I know it's not a "classic" in most eyes..But tech it IS a classic. It's just a summer driver/Fun show truck........I DO have a 1969.....That is a classic...But I haven't got far enough to insure it yet

The info for the plates would come from your dept of motor vehicles or similar; the insurance - if it's not considered a classic by insurance company standards, then you can insure with any carrier you want

Is classic car insurance better for a 1984 corvette or regular car insurance

i'am planning on getting a 1984 corvette but the insurance for it is a little too high.i just found out about classic car insurance but i really don't know much about it.but for classic car insurance,am i limited to a certain number of things like how far i can drive my car, when i can drive, etc?will the insurance actually be less or more for classic car insurance?and what is the best classic car insurance company i should go with

I would go with the Classic Car Insurance because other wise you might not get as much as you want for your car if it is ever totaled or stolen. I know some classic car insurance is stated amount & regular insurance is ACV (Actual Cash Value)

How can I cut plastic model car pieces without ruining them

I recently started building scale models of classic cars again for hobby/relaxation purposes. I had an idea to combine pieces from a couple different model kits to make sort of a "frakenstein" cutsom looking truck (a cab from one kit, a bed from another, etc) but a couple pieces, namely the truck bed, would need to be cut a little bit to make them fit together.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this?

For straight cuts it's common to use a razor saw. The wide blade helps keeping the cut straight. Jeweller's saws can be used for more complex cuts or difficult to reach places. The blade is very thin and can snap so be carefull with it.
There are also saw blades which can be mounted in hobby knifes. These can also be usefull in tight spots.

One more note about the dremel: I would not use it on plastic as it's a bit of an over kill but if you do: use the circular saw blades, not the cutoff disks (like thin grinding stones). These create less heat and you have less risk the disc with shatter.

And just for completeness, there are also hotknives in the form of a U bow with heated metal wire or a knife mounted in a soldering iron. I personally wouldn't use those either as the saws give more control.

One more edit to react on mjobien's messge below: a filler is a very good suggestion. You will be needing quite a bit of it probably. :) The most common is the body filler with you can get in tubes in scale modelling stores. Just a creme to be smeared into gaps etc. Becomes rockhard be sanded afterwards.
If you need to build complex or curved shapes, then you can use epoxy putty (something like two component synthetic clay). Personally I would not recommend GS as it has quite a bit of memory and is harder to sand afterwards. I would go for a hardcuring putty like Milliput, A&B, Magic sculp, Aves, Brown stuff, or Tamiya. These can be sanded afterwards.

But I would not recommend green stuff (or kneadatite blue/yellow as it's officially called) for this. GS was optimised for sculpting organic figures which have to survive vulcanisation. As such it has a fair bit of memory and stay a little rubbery afterward making it hard to sand. I would suggest a putty like A&B, aves, Magic sculp or Milliput. These putties can be softened and smoothed with water and will be sandable after curing. They are not as strong as GS, so if you want the best of both worlds go for 1:1 GS with one of the hard putties. Another filler is the body filler you can get in scale modelling stores.

What is a good hobby camera for a beginner

I am really interested in photography and want to take it up as a hobby. I dont need a top of the range camera, but i am willing to spend money for something of good quality. My maximum would be $1000 - $2000. Can anyone suggest something?

There's another alternative which you should check into: The new Olympus DSLR E-510 10 megapixel 2-lens camera kit with built-in image stabilization and active CMOS which is found only in the Nikon 200 and 300. And the E510 can be set to "vivid" colors. The 2-lens starter kit sells for around $689 at samys.com which currently does not charge the $58.00 CA sales tax up through Wednesday, December 12th.

Is it a good idea to adopt a cat for my son from the pound

My son is an only child and gets bored and lonely because he is so active. I want to get him a cat because he likes cats, but how much will it cost to adopt one? About how much does it cost to maintain one

I think that's a great idea! Not only will your son have a new friend, but he will learn many valuable lessons from having a pet such as empathy and responsibility.

Cats are very low-maintenance compared to dogs. They clean themselves, they remember how to get home after being outside, and get their own exercise. They also entertain themselves pretty well, especially kittens, who will play with anything. The only things you have to worry about are feeding them, making sure they have water, and a litterbox if they are indoors.

Also, a cat is more exciting than a fish :)

There will probably be a fee to adopt the cat, but this is better than getting a free kitten because they aren't really free... they need shots and everything which could end up costing more than just getting one from a shelter.

A tip though... a lot of shelters may refuse to adopt any cats to you if you even mention the word "outdoors." They will even try to trick you by giving you a questionarre to fill out with one of the questions being "will your cat be indoors or outdoors?" If your answer isn't "it will never go outside" they will refuse to give you a cat even if you change your mind and promise to keep it indoors. I don't see any harm in letting the cat outside every once in a while, but they do so I would just give them the answer they want.

Also, cats vary in personality. There are some cats who just plain don't like children. However, there are also many cats who are very friendly and get along with everyone. Try your best to get a very friendly cat who will enjoy hanging out with your son.

How do you train a cat to be a good,nice,well-maintained,happ… to you overall cat

It's tough as they seem to want to do their own thing and march to their own drum beat. It is easier to train a dog. But repetition seem to work with a cat and holding it up so you are face to face and then talk to it , repeating short commands for 3 or 4 times. Do this for a couple of days and see what happens. For naughty behavior a simple loud NO and then a light tap on the nose when it is doing the misbehavior. Mine has adjusted for the most part, eats what I feed him, sleeps next to my feet, plays with his toys daily, uses the litter box so what more could one ask. Except he likes to tease my cockateil.
